Earth Friendly Tips

We finally got around to watching Oprah's Earth Day Show (a month later!) and it had some great tips. One in particular deals with how to wash pesticides off of fruits and vegetables by creating your own homemade 'Veggie Spray' using the following ingredients:

1 cup water
1 cup white vinegar
1 tbsp baking soda
20 drops of grapefruit seed extract

Mix ingredients into a spray bottle. Spray fruit/vegetables and let sit for about 10 minutes and then wash. This mixture will wash the pesticide residue right off the food!

The show really focused on simple things we can ALL do, even if it is just one thing - start eating organic food (especially if you have babies/kids, as they are the most susceptible to these harmful chemicals), buy products that are germall-, paraben-, and sodium lauryl sulfate - free, use cloth grocery bags, buy compact fluorescent light bulbs, compost your food waste (don't throw the meat in it though), use soy based candles, avoid plastic water bottles, and above all - reduce, reuse, and RECYCLE! We don't claim to be the most perfect eco-friendly family, but I am extremely proud to say that we do most all of these things. Now that we have learned about the germall, paraben, and SLS stuff, we will be getting rid of those products. Thanks to my sister Deb for sending Stacey some Burt's Bees Body Wash & Soaps for her birthday!

Given the awareness we are all exposed to now regarding our impact on this planet, I am confident in saying that we are the generation that is working toward repairing the damage that has been done. Let's hope that our children and grandchildren will see those efforts!
