On Saturday, we (along with the Huff family) took the kids up to DC for the Annual Green Festival that was held at the DC Convention Center. What an amazing trip it was! First, let me tell you what a blast the kids had riding the metro. They had a lot of fun. When we arrived at the Green Festival, we were at first overwhelmed not only by the vastness of the venue itself, but also by the sheer number of people attending this event. It was huge.
We walked around for about 3 hours learning about all of the environmentally-friendly, sustainable resources that are available right here in the DC-metro/No VA area. We grabbed tons of organic samples of snacks for the kids, tried some great organic foods and drinks, got even free MORE cloth grocery bags (to add to the stack we already have!), and learned a few more things about what we can do beyond what we are already doing at home.
I tell ya, I have been in the environmental field for over 10 years and continue to be amazed at the movement that continues each year. It's no longer just the trend, or a generational movement that is occurring, it is a global movement driven by an increasing number of people who are becoming more and more educated about the environment and our role/responsiblity to do the right thing. I am encouraged by the level of efforts taking place! As parents, Stacey and I also feel that it is also our responsibility to teach Jack, Caroline, and Lauren about the importance of taking care of this earth on a local scale and we hope that as they continue to grow into childhood and into adults, that they will become even better stewards. It is our hope that this will be one of the things they have learned from us.
